The Free Pre-School Year in ECCE

Children enrolled in playschools will receive free pre-school provision of 3 hours per day, 5 days each week over a 38 week year.  This equates to a weekly capitation grant to the service provider of €64.50 and parents with children enrolled in these services will not be charged.  Children enrolled in full- or part-time childcare services will receive free pre-school provision of 2 hours and 15 minutes per day, five days a week over a 50 week period or three hours per day over thirty eight weeks. The free pre school year does not affect any of your entitlements.

Please see Cavan CCC's Leaflet on the Free Pre-School Scheme with useful information and a list of all childcare services in the county that are operating the scheme. Please note some new services planning to open in September that have applied to enter the scheme are not fully approved yet, so these are not on our list. We will update the list when they are approved.

Points and facts for parents.

To avail of the free pre school year in September 2011 your child must have been born between 2nd February 2007 & 30th June 2008.

You are entitled to either three hours free preschool or if your child goes to full/part time day care it may be 2.15mins over a longer period.

You may be asked to pay for an additional half hour per day for pre school as the pre school that you attend may previously been running for three and a half hours but you do not have to – you can send your child for the three hours only free!

If your child attends a full day care or part time service you will get your pre school free (3hours or 2.15mins) and pay the normal rate for the other hours.

An annual capitation grant of approximately €2,450 will be payable, over a full year, to participating pre-school services for each enrolled child on a five day basis.

How do I get the free pre school year

Once your child is the correct age to avail of the scheme you are automatically entitled to the scheme.

Enroll your child in the childcare service (for a full list of childcare services participating the free pre school scheme contact Cavan County Childcare Committee – most childcare services in the county are!!!)

The Childcare Manager/Leader will give you a form to complete which will ask for your child(ren) PPS number.

Complete the form and give it back to the Childcare Manager/Leader.

He/She will then send it back to the Office of the Minister for Children and Youth affairs to verify the ages.

This form quantifies your child’s eligibility and the amount of capitation the childcare provider will get.
